Autumn Leaf Cookies
Painting these cookies with the colored glaze is optional, of course,
but makes them pretty, fun, and seasonal. This is a good project to do
with children.
Ingredients
At a glance
Rolled and cutout cookies
Makes
45 cookies
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup pure maple syrup, preferably dark amber
- 1/3 cup milk
- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- Cookie Paint Glaze, tinted with red, yellow, and/or orange food colorings
Steps
Cream butter and margarine on medium speed until light, about 2
minutes. Add sugar and continue beating until smooth and
combined. Blend in maple syrup, then milk. Whisk together
flour, baking soda, and salt, then stir into batter to make a soft,
pliable dough.
Gather dough in a ball and cover with plastic wrap or foil. Refrigerate for 1 hour, until firm.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Lightly grease or spray cookie sheets.
Divide dough in quarters. Roll out dough, one quarter at a time, on a lightly floured board or pastry cloth to between 1/8 and 1/4 inch thick. Cut out cookies with a maple or oak leaf cutter (or, use a tree-shaped cutter).
Set cookies on cookie sheets. Bake in the center of the oven for 8 to 10 minutes, until cookies are golden on the bottom and still pale on top. Transfer to wire racks to cool.
Using a pastry brush or a clean, wide artist’s brush, brush the cooled cookies with glaze, using one or two colors per cookie. Leave some small areas unpainted to create the effect of shading. Allow glaze to set before serving.
