Black Walnut Apple Bars

- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/4 cups packed light brown sugar
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
- 3/4 cup finely chopped
- black walnuts (or regular walnuts)
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
- 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 egg
- 1 1/2 cups peeled, finely chopped
- tart apples (such as Granny Smith or Jonathan)
Steps
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease or spray a 9-by-13-inch baking pan.
Combine flour, brown sugar, butter, black walnuts, and cinnamon until crumbly. Pat 2 1/2 cups of mixture firmly over bottom of pan; set aside.
To remaining flour-sugar mixture, add baking soda, salt, milk, vanilla, and egg. Beat until smooth. Stir in apples.
Spread evenly over bottom crust; top layer will be thin. Bake in the center of the oven for 20 to 25 minutes, until golden and firm. Let cool in pan, then cut into bars.
