Basic Butter Cookie

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups flour
Steps
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.Cream butter and sugar on medium speed until light. Beat in vanilla and salt. Stir in flour to make a medium-stiff dough.

Wrap dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 45 minutes to 1 hour, until firm.

Roll out dough to between 1/8 and 1/4 inch thickness, and cut shapes with 2- to 3-inch cookie cutters. Sprinkle with decorating sugar if desired.
